Posted 29 Jan 2010

Recently, Pandora Inc. announced it has reached an agreement with electronics company Pioneer Corporation. Soon, drivers will be able to listen to personalized radio service on their vehicles. It brings us one step closer to the dashboard Internet radio, this development represents what could be serious competition for the satellite and traditional radio. Beginning in March, fears and satellite radio’s traditional industries will face the Pioneer launches the navigation and entertainment device that allows Pandora users that the service flow through Apple’s iPhone to access Pandora their vehicles.

Surely the Pandora Pioneer is only the beginning of what could be a real boom in Internet radio. With the technology of wireless Internet now growing and advancing faster than ever, will not be long before the online radio is available from virtually anywhere at any time. Developments such as mobile broadband and WiMax promise of making the online car radio a legitimate option for drivers and passengers.

What could it mean this kind of evolution in the world of radio? So far, no clear answers.

It is known that more and more popular satellite radio has meant tough competition for traditional radio. Services such as Sirius offer ten times the options proposed by regular waves of talk shows to music and more. A growing number of celebrities have moved to satellite programs, enjoying the greater freedom that allows them to speak their minds and choice of entertainment content.

Now, however, Internet radio and services can give the series a run for their money. While some radio programs are currently broadcast today on satellite, Internet radio should be both a success as it is to be, will not be long before these programs are available online. Satellite radio could face a migration of customers outside its service.

The challenge of the Internet poses to traditional radio is perhaps more complex and less clear. Although both satellite and Internet radio are very attractive qualities, traditional radio is, well, tradition. Beyond that, it is also desirable. Meanwhile, satellite and Internet require the purchase of additional equipment to install in vehicles, traditional radio is now a standard part of production vehicles. “All drivers of family leave, easy to use and convenient local radio in the car? It’s doubtful. The question is, how many?

There are also questions about what Internet radio services like Pandora could make new music. If personalized Internet radio becomes the norm, could be increasingly difficult for new bands and artists to be heard. A play for the first time on radio stations like New York’s Z-100 in the future could be much less beneficial than it is today.

Wireless internet is certainly changing the way we live, affecting more industries than in the past we could have imagined. New developments in the world of Internet radio on the car is just one example. Pandora – Pioneer’s announcement, however, leaves us with many doubts and questions about the future of radio.
